Early on Thursday, July 8, 1999 I received a message from a friend that said:
"A while back I forwarded a message about Yahoo buying out GeoCities
and changing the TOS to indicate that all material posted there becomes the
exclusive rights of Yahoo. The message I forwarded also encouraged
boycotting Yahoo. Here is the results of that boycott."
The Boycott Yahoo Home Page for July 6, 1999 followed.
As I read through this document, noting all the credits and thank yous given to various groups, I was awed by the number of people involved and the sheer amount of work done, even though I had taken a small part in The Haunting myself. Then I came to the bottom lines, and I quote:
"I've been working with
little sleep for the past eight days trying to keep up with the day-to-day
needs of the web site, background interviews and the rest of the stuff which
doesn't make the headlines. ..................
We did it folks!"
"Cheers"
Jim Townsend
...........and I thought "My ___, none of these people he is thanking would have been able to accomplish this if not for him!" True, Jim could not have done it by himself. It was the community effort that created success. But Jim was the inspiration and the one who provided the site and bandwidth, and the one with the talent to draw all the other willing Net Community members together.
WE THANK YOU, JIM TOWNSEND,
on behalf of all the Geocities "homesteaders"
WE THANK YOU WITH LOVE AND SINCERITY
WE THANK YOU, JIM TOWNSEND,
on behalf of the millions of Internet "citizens"
who may benefit from this event in years to come,
